Our laying hens are unconfined 24/7/365 and roam freely around the farm.  They are fed a diet of regional feed which can include barley, wheat, oats, milk and produce scraps, as well as all the bugs and whatever else they scratch from the earth.

I was asked why I refer to my birds as "Better Than Organic".

Organic standards for poultry doesn't start until the second day of life. While still in the egg each chick is given antibiotics (I'm afraid that this is done to my broiler chicks as well), and then they are given vaccinations after hatching (ours don't get this). A synthetic amino acid is put in their feed to compensate for its lack, in an unnatural vegetarian diet (mine get it from bugs on pasture). While required to be given access to the outdoors this doesn't mean they actually go there and the "recommended" space allotted for each bird is one square foot. The food they are fed is required to be organic, but it is so protien rich that they grow so fast their legs can't hold them up, and the way they are handled is less than stellar. Some places are raising them truly on pasture, but most are still raised in big broiler houses.  As we like to say, "our animals just have one bad day."
