Grass Finished, Beyond Organic, Pastured and Free Range Meats
How do you raise your animals? Like we do our kids: with enough freedom to grow and enough protection to be safe. Our cattle are on pasture grass during the summer months and hay and pasture during the winter months. During the grazing season (May-Oct.) they are moved twice daily to fresh grass and all of our animals have free access to water. The sheep are on pasture all year around and are supplemented in the winter with hay. Our hogs are likewise on pasture all year around with supplemental feed of mostly ground hay mixed with some grain. It takes a little longer to fatten a hog on this ration but, as the farmer said to the grain salesman, "What's time to a hog." Our egg layers are fed a whole grain diet and are free to roam the farm 24/7/365 to gather fresh grass and bugs as they choose. The meat birds are raised on pasture and follow the cows. They are supplemented with a hay/grain mixed ration diet to go along with the grass and bugs they get from the pasture. They are not confined in any type of fencing or pen and can roam as much as they desire. A livestock guarding dog is assigned for their protection as well as one for the sheep.
What do you feed them? All of our animals are raised on land that has not been contaminated with any type of herbicide, pesticide or chemical fertilizer in over 30 years. We raise our own grass, alfalfa mix of hay and this is what we feed to our animals. We do not sell any feed off the farm. All our nutrients stay here. We also put up some small grains, usually either oats or barley, occasionally wheat. This is also fed only on the farm. We try to maintain a closed system, however, due to water limitations, we do buy grain to supplement our own crops. The grain we buy is either certified organic or has been raised organically.
How do you butcher them? Our animals (with the exception of poultry) are processed under State inspection and are licensed to be sold to any individual, restaurant or retail outlet, within the State of Wyoming. Although this processing is considered to be "equal to" a Federally inspected product, it cannot be shipped outside the State, which requires a FDA plant, which currently, Wyoming does not have.
Where do you butcher them? Currently we have our animals processed at Wind River Processing in Thermopolis, WY. Our meat is vacuum sealed in sturdy clear plastic which helps to protect it while stored in the freezer and allows you to inspect the product before you buy. By doing the processing close to home, it reduces the stress on our animals - any time we can do that, it's a good thing. The processor allows us to watch the slaughter and butchering process, upon request, so we can ensure that our animals are being treated as humanly as possible. If you buy a whole animal and wish to have it processed at a different facility, that can be arranged on a case by case basis.
